Codified Close Translation as a Standard for MT

چکیده

This paper proposes that quality criteria are set up for machine translation systems that attempt to capture what can be considered the upper limit for the performance of MT systems. It argues that the best performance MT currently should aim for is close translation, and that attempts should be made to codify what that entails for any given language pair. Some guidelines for the selection of close translations are proposed and their application on concrete examples drawn from an English-Swedish parallel corpus is discussed. The definition of different quality levels in relation to a high-quality standard is also

On the Translation Quality of Google Translate: With a Concentration on Adjectives

Translation, whose first traces date back at least to 3000 BC (Newmark, 1988), has always been considered time-consuming and labor-consuming. In view of this, experts have made numerous efforts to develop some mechanical systems which can reduce part of this time and labor. The advancement of computers in the second half of the twentieth century paved the ground for the invention of machine tra...

Tagging as a Key to Successful Mt

This paper describes the key role of a stochastic morphological tagger in an MT system between very closely related languages. The MT system Česílko exploits the close relatedness of both natural languages in question (Czech and Slovak), which allows substantial simplification of the translation method used. It also uses to a great advantage the possibilities of combination of a human translati...

Machine Translation of Very Close Languages

Using examples of the transfer-based MT system between Czech and Russian RUSLAN and the word-for-word MT system with morphological disambiguation between Czech and Slovak (~ESILKO we argue that for really close languages it is possible to obtain better translation quality by means of simpler methods. The problem of translation to a group of typologically similar languages using a pivot language...

Comparative Evaluation of Automatic Named Entity Recognition from Machine Translation Output

We report the results of an experiment on automatic NE recognition from Machine Translations produced by five different MT systems. NE annotations are compared with the results obtained from two highquality human translations. The experiment shows that for recognition of a large class of NEs (Person Names, Locations, Dates, etc.) MT output is almost as useful as a human translation. For other t...
